The CSIRO, or Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation is Australia’s national science agency and one of the largest research agencies in the world. It’s 13 divisions work across areas including:

- Preventative health
- Materials science & engineering
- Sustainable energy
CSIRO is involved in more than 740 research activities, working with leading scientific organisations in over 80 countries with partners and customers ranging from foreign governments, small companies to large multi-nationals and international foundations.
The CSIRO Energy Centre in Newcastle focuses on research in sustainable energy, the environmental impacts of energy and environmentally acceptable fossil fuel research and development. It is located adjacent to the 2 parcels of land currently available at Steel River Estate. Read more about it here.
